Parents sue their son for not giving birth in India

Parents in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand have filed a lawsuit against their son-in-law for failing to provide them with children after six years of marriage.

Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, both 61 and 57 years old, say they have spent all their hard-earned money on taking care of their son and marrying him for a spectacular wedding.

They want the child to pay them about $ 650,000 in compensation if he or she does not give birth this year.

Their son and his wife have yet to say anything

The parents said the reason for filing such an unusual complaint was because "they are very upset."

Mr Prasad says he spent all his possessions on his son, sending him to the United States in 2006 to study for a pilot degree for $ 65,000.

He returned to India in 2007, but lost his job and his parents spent more than two years helping him, according to the Times of India .

Their son Shrey Sagar, 35, eventually got a job as a pilot.

His parents say he has been married to his wife Shubhangi Sinha, now 31, since 2016, hoping they will have a "grandson to play with" when they retire.

The parents said they celebrated him at a luxury hotel, bought him a $ 80,000 luxury car and took him and his honeymoon abroad.

"I have been married to my son for six years but they are still not ready to give birth," said Mr Prasad.

"At least if we have a grandson to play with, our anxiety will be greatly reduced."

The parents' lawyer, AK Srivastava, told The National that the parents had asked their son to pay them compensation because of "their seriousness".

"The dream of all parents is to be grandparents. They have waited many years to be grandparents."

The case is expected to be heard on May 17, 2020 in Haridwar, where the complaint was lodged.
